Leif and his mom Airica, have been staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Fort Worth since September. Their journey began when Leif was diagnosed with a very rare condition called Hyper X Linked IGM syndrome. Initially, the family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House of Oklahoma City, which was closer to home. However, they had to relocate to Fort Worth, TX, to access a specialist who could provide the necessary care for Leif. Leif’s treatment has been intense and challenging. He has undergone a bone marrow transplant and multiple other procedures.
Despite the difficulties, RMHFW has been a comforting and supportive community for the family during this time. “It makes me feel better knowing that I’m not alone. Getting a rare diagnosis can feel lonely, but here there is a community,” Airica admitted. One of Airica’s favorite memories during their stay was taking the family to a Monster Truck Show. Knowing that Leif was immunocompromised, special arrangements were made so they could enjoy the event safely.
“Getting to go to the truck show was the best. We had our own section—it was incredible,” Airica reflected.
They had their own section, allowing Leif to experience the excitement of the Monster Trucks without compromising his health. This outing was a much-needed break for the family, offering them a chance to create joyful memories despite their medical challenges.
“This year, we were relying on family for Christmas gifts for the kids because of the travel and medical expenses. But we get to select gifts for our kids [through RMHFW] and that makes one of the biggest impacts.”
